Second graders took an amazing trip the VMFA to see the artwork of Howardena Pindell. The work on display is full of thick paint, glitter, collage, sewing, and painting. We compared her work to the work of Beauford Delaney, as he painted a very textural painting of Marian Anderson just outside the exhibit.
Students drew parallels between the subject matter, the textural quality and the limited palette. We loved this exhibit. We came back to school and made some textural abstract images of our own using gesso, paint, glitter and paper bits and pieces.
