In 5th grade students are investigating using natural materials to make their own dye and then dying large skeins of wool in order to weave with it later. Students have to use measuring spoons, beets, cabbage, coffee and onion skins to create different colors. We used 1 thrift store crock pot, a rice cooker and a hot plate to keep the dye warm and all of these worked. We did precut the cabbage etc. Kids spent a lot of time measuring out their skeins and placing them in a mordant before being put in the dye. Updates to follow.
