When you are real, shabbiness doesn’t matter

Its that time of year again…We are reading The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams in first grade. I love everything about this book. I love the idea that things become real through love. This week we are reading the book and drawing pictures of rabbits, but next week is the truly exciting week when we get to do portraits of our most loved and most real toys. This book almost always chokes me up, as do the beautiful portraits that first graders make of their own most loved treasures. Images will follow soon…

“Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.”
