The Recent Past in First Grade

“Real isn’t how you are made,” said the Skin Horse. “It’s a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but really loves you, then you become Real.”

We read the Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams in First Grade. Students drew pictures of rabbits while they listened to the story being read, and then the following week drew from their own most loved stuffed animals. Students imagined these animals coming to life and asked themselves where they might go.
