I really can’t say enough about how AWESOME Megan Marlatt was at the Visual Arts Center. She came into her exhibit and spoke to the kindergarteners about her giant paintings of toys, and really helped them to invest in her story. She helped them to move past just the awesome piles of plastic toys, lovingly depicted in bright acrylic paint into a place where they understood where she was coming from. She asked them “Do you ever imagine that at night when you go to sleep, your toys come to life?”. Many of my students, of course did, and they had a wonderful exploration of how to show that idea through paint. As if that wasn’t enough, she even put one of the giant heads she makes on and danced around in it. What more could you want in a field trip? Nothing. Truly glorious.
Love the photos. Looks like it was a great trip.
Jessica, as you know, it was a fantastic trip! Thanks for letting me take your students on the adventure of a lifetime.
I think these children were awesome and they inspired me. I really enjoyed talking with them. I want them to know that I had a very special kindergarten teacher too when I was their age and she encouraged me to be an artist. It was because of her love and attention that I became an artist.
It is so nice to know how many people were deeply influenced by a good teacher. Thanks for your comment, Megan.
